The project „Strengthening of Tourism through Education and Promotion in the region of Central BiH – STEP in the Region of CBiH“ is financed by the European Union.
The project is implemented by the Forum of women „Alternative“ Kakanj in partnership with:
The Franciscan monastery in Kraljeva Sutjeska and
The sport-scientific club „Atom“ Zavidovići.
Kakanj municipality is an associate in the project.
Cost of the project is 166.665,34 EUR

The project is a result of researching needs, available resources and the state of tourism in the region. In spite of tourism not being recognized as an economic and profitable activity, Forum of women „Alternative“ Kakanj sees the development of tourism, its promotion and increase in the number of services as a base for the economic development of the region.

Improved quality and increased number of tourism-related services will be realized through a program of education of the local population, tourist agencies' staff and the staff of the tourist Info centre in Kraljeva Sutjeska.
Hospitality, categorization of accommodation objects, creation of tourist offer, preparation and serving of food will be some of the themes addressed during 12 workshops which will include 20 households interested in tourism.

Staff of the tourist Info center and tourist agencies will work on connecting services, creating unique offer and marketing. The tourist Info center in Kraljeva Sutjeska should be institutionally strengthened by the project thus becoming capable to continue with started activities after completion of the project.
All the participants of the educative program will get appropriate certificates as well as the necessary space to promote their services, either by printed and online tourist guides or in the unique tourist offer of the region. The quality of their services will be marked by a competent jury. Valuable prizes will be given to best services as encouragement for tourism development.

Printed and online versions of the region's tourist guide are important for the project as they promote tourist resources, destination and services. Untouched natural scenery, historical and cultural monuments, rich tradition, handicrafts, traditional food and other resources will finally be unified in one place and presented to a wider public, tourist workers and potential tourists.
The online tourist guide will be freely available to other legal persons for promotion of their tourist offer and services.

The project is specific as it intends to use printed brochures to promote religious tourism – traditional, cultural and religious contents as well as the old religious buildings such as the Franciscan monastery in Kraljeva Sutjeska dating back to the year 1340 and the mosque in Kraljeva Sutjeska from 1463.

The project will engage young people from the region. 100 of them will participate in three seven-day camps during which they will arrange and mark mountain trails to Ponijeri, Bocica and Tajan, clean river banks, mark climbing rocks and promote various sports such as speleology, mountaineering, diving and beautiful natural scenery. For the first time in the region, an underwater river cleaning action will be organized as part of the diving school.

A promotional conference will mark the end of the project as well as the beginning of tourism development in the region of Central BiH. Video conference will enable 200 guests, representatives of the international community, state and entity governments, tourist agencies and local NGOs, to participate in the promotion of the online tourist guide. They will all be given a printed version of the tourist guide and other promotional materials such as souvenirs – traditional handicrafts that confirm centuries-long traditions in the region.

Promotional conference will be preceded by three-day tourist meetings which will be attended by 40 representatives of tourist agencies from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia and Serbia and Montenegro. Thematic workshops will provide the opportunity for participants to exchange experiences, information and offers and discuss ways of participating in the promotion and organization of tourism.

You do not need to visit distant places in order to experience medieval Bosnia and enjoy natural, cultural, historical and traditional riches, ethno-gastronomy, traditional handicrafts, camps, speleology, rafting and other sports. You can find it all in the region of the Central BiH.
