Izletište Ponijeri
 Ponijeri is
located 1144 – 1200 meters above the sea level and is made by localities of
Opaka ravan, Vrhevlje and Jehice. The name Ponijeri comes from the word “ponor”
(to plunge, to go under) and is connected to numerous underground streams
present in the area.
Ponijeri are accessible from 4 directions, but the shortest and best route is
goes along Zgošća river via the local community of Tršće. The route is 19 km
long, with 10 km of well-maintained macadam. The first built object in Ponijeri
is the Hunters’ lodge which was built in 1960s by hunters. Afterwards, people
from Kakanj started building weekend-houses and there are currently over 200 of
these.
 Because of its
altitude Ponijeri represent an air-based health resort, suitable for holidays
and recreation, which makes it the destination of choice for numerous sports
teams from the entire BiH. Ponijeri are very rich with flora and fauna. It is
suitable for walking, sightseeing, collecting mushrooms, medicinal herbs and
berries. Sports lovers have at their disposal beach volleyball, soccer and
basketball fields; the area is also suitable for running, mountain biking,
mountaineering and ski sports.
During the winter months average height of the snowfall is 100 cm. Installation
of the ski-lift should be completed soon, which will add to the tourist offer
and enable classification of Ponijeri as one of the ski centres in BiH.
Ponijeri are about 6km away from Tajan mountain which is in the procedure of
being proclaimed a natural monument.
No war-related activities went on in Ponijeri so there is no danger of
unexploded mines.
