SKI Centre Ponijeri

Ponijeri is located 1144 – 1200 meters above the sea level and is made of
localities of Opaka ravan, Vrhevlje and Jehice. Ponijeri is reachable from four
directions, but the shortest and best way is to follow the Zgošća River via the
village of Tršće. The road is 19 km long (measured from the town's centre); it
was asphalted in 2007 and is regularly maintained in winter months.
About Ponijeri
The name Ponijeri comes from the word ponor (plunge) and refers to numerous
underground streams located here. The first object to be constructed in Ponijeri
was a hunter's lodge which was built in the '60ies. Afterwards, people started
building weekend houses which currently number more than 300.
Because of its altitude Ponijeri represent an air-based health resort suitable
for holidays and recreation, which makes it the destination of choice for
numerous sports teams from the entire BiH. Ponijeri is very rich in flora and
fauna. It is suitable for walking, sightseeing, collecting mushrooms, medicinal
herbs and berries. Sports lovers have at their disposal beach volleyball, soccer
and basketball fields; the area is also suitable for running, mountain biking,
mountaineering and ski sports.
Ponijeri were not affected by war activities, so there is no danger of
unexploded devices.
Ski Centre Ponijeri
Ponijeri ski centre was established in 2007 and equipped with a ski lift.
Advantages of this centre are the good quality and affordable accommodation in
motels and private houses (there are over 400 weekend houses), excellent ski
track, existence of ski school, possibility of equipment renting and good road
accessibility. The fact that part of Ponijeri is located is also part of an area
protected by state (Tajan Natural Reservation) speaks in favour of excellent
health benefits that stay in Ponijeri brings.
Regarding its characteristics, the ski centre is intended for recreational
skiing. The track is 870 m long, with altitudinal difference of 150 m (start is
at 1212 m.a.s.l., while the lower plateau is at 1070 m.a.s.l.). It is
approximately 30 m wide. The ski track has extensive safety nets, signs and
other infrastructure which make it safe for potential visitors. The ski lift is
available and has the capacity of 140 skiers per hour.
Ponijeri ski centre is run by JP „Kakanj sport“. Since the season 2008/2009 it
has been possible to rent skiing equipment. There is also a fast food restaurant
where visitors can get food and warm drinks.

Connection to other locations
Ponijeri is about 6 km from Tajan, which was proclaimed a natural park in
February 2008, in accordance with the federal nature conservation law.
Due to exquisite nature (canyons, speleological objects, lakes, stone bridges,
flora, fauna, paleontological findings), Tajan is classified as category one
protection area. Total area of the park is 4.948,35 ha, of which 4.038,35 ha
is in Zavidovići and the remaining 910 ha is in Kakanj (Ponijeri).
