ZAVIDOVIĆI
There area of Zavidovići municipality spreads over 521 km2, has population of
38175 inhabitants and, it is located 15 km from the main Regional road m-17.
Zavidovići is also accessible from the direction of Kakanj, via Ponijeri
mountain with a road leading through dense deciduous and coniferous forests.

No one can certainly say when the first human stepped into the presents-day
Zavidovići municipality, the area between Bosnia, Krivaja and Gostović rivers
which are very clean and rich in fish species such as carp and trout.

There has never been any serious archaeological research done in Zavidovići
municipality, so there are very few material traces of ancient civilizations
living in this region. Historical evidence suggests that the river Bosna valley
was part of the rout used by the Greeks and Romans toward the fertile lowlands
of Pannonia region in the north. Numerous findings from neighboring
municipalities undoubtedly confirm the region had also been populated by the
Illyrian tribes, but the history provides an answer as to what happened to them
with the arrival of Slavs.

Prior to the arrival of Turks Bosnia was an organized state with present day
Zavidovići municipality as its part. There are numerous remains of the bogomil
culture found in Zavidovići providing and insight into this period. After day
conquered Zenica, the Turks continued along the river Bosnia to Zavidovići,
Maglaj and further north. No reliable evidence exists as to when they conquered
this area and established their authority. Even though Zavidovići is small town,
it is in the process of rapid and successful development. Ecology is high on the
town’s agenda, with building of parks, cleaning of river banks and wild life
protection activities. There are appropriate associations taking care of these
issues.
