KAKANJ
In the heart of Bosnia located is the small mining – based settlement of
Kakanj. What can one say about this small yet beautiful and docile town?
You need to come and see for yourself! Besides its natural beauty, cultural –
historic monuments and well – known excursion sites, the most important thing in
Kakanj are its people good Bosnian souls offering kindness, laughter and
traditional meals. For these reasons Kakanj is the town you can visit and leave
completely fulfilled, happy and satisfied.

Kakanj municipality is located in the central part of Sarajevo – Zenica
valley, the most economically important and the most densely populated region in
BiH. The municipality has population of 46.000 people and area of 377 km2. Via
the railway Doboj – Sarajevo – Ploče and M-17 freeway (part of corridor V-C),
Kakanj is connected with all important centre’s in BiH and, trough them, with
Europe and world.

First material traces date back to the middle Neolithic period, IV and III
millennia B.C. Kakanj municipality is interesting to tourist because of Kraljeva
Sutjeska, a small local community located nearby which used to be the
residential place of Bosnian rulers and kings. Cultural – historic monuments in
Karaljeva Sutjeska, together with Bobovac, represent the most important
testaments of the medieval Bosnian state, with numerous archaeological,
architectural, written and other traces, especially those from the 14th and 15th
century. The Library and the Museum of the Franciscan Monastery keep priceless
historical, cultural and artistic treasure.

Among numerous and important medieval monuments of Kakanj municipality, a
special place belongs stećak (tombstone) found in Zgošća, which is one of the
most valuable tombstones of its kind in BiH. The mosque in Kraljeva Sutjeska,
built by sultan Mohamed II El Fatih, is one of the oldest mosques in BiH and
there is also a beautiful Bosnian house from the 18th century.

It is almost impossible to imagine Kakanj of today without Ponijeri. The
connection that exists between Ponijeri and people of Kakanj is due to their
love of nature. There are numerous other locations in Kakanj suitable for
vacation and recreation which are, as such, necessary to inhabitants of one of
the oldest and most industrially developed towns in BiH. Tourism resources of
Kakanj are enhanced and improved by its economic factors. In the first place
there is the coal mine Kakanj open in 1900, then steam power plant Čatići, which
went into production on July 1st 1956 and the cement factory Kakanj open in
1978., which has since its establishment been successful in the European market
and which is now managed by Heidelberg Cement Group.
